Four Wynds ~ Our Environmental Policy

Four Wynds is a family run B&B and we are committed to doing as much as we can to help protect our environment and improve our sustainability.

We really appreciate that we live in a truly beautiful area which has been formed by a unique combination of geology, nature, climate and history; we want our children and their children to be able to live in it and to be able to enjoy it.

At Four Wynds we are dedicated to reducing our impact on our surroundings as much as is possible.

  Hadrian's Wall on Walltown Craggs

Here are some of the areas which we are currently working on:

  • Using local suppliers and buying together with others to reduce fuel consumption
  • Choosing organic and Fairtrade produce wherever possible
  • We are members of “Fairtrade Hadrian’s Wall”
  • Promoting local businesses and providing details of local walks and Bus Services
  • Installation of efficient loft insulation
  • Recycling as much as possible – paper, cardboard, plastics and glass
  • Reducing paper usage via e-mails and recycling printer cartridges
  • Changing to Energy Saving Bulbs where possible
  • Thermostatically controlled, easily adjustable heating
  • Installation of Water Butts
  • Composting for use in the garden
  • Assisting local community groups and projects (including walking projects and the local Red Squirrel conservation group)
  • Supporting and encouraging our walking and cycling guests
  • Compliance with environmental legislation

We are also investigating ways to improve:

  • How we heat the house
  • Our use of electricity
  • Our vehicle and fuel use
  • The type of materials we use to clean and maintain the house

As a guest here at Four Wynds we hope that you, too, will take a little time to think about the environment during your stay - perhaps by turning off the lights in your room whenever possible, re-using towels, or by visiting local attractions and supporting the local area.
If you have any ideas of how we may “do better”, we would be pleased to hear from you as we are committed to a continual improvement of our sustainability credentials.
Thank you,
Nigel and Catherine Jarvis
